The ‘Tone Defender’ Harp Mic Cable – 20′ w/ BLACK Canare Quad wire
Visit my auctions for vintage microphones & related items… Custom fabricated harp mic’s & cables offered via ebay Buy-It-Now.
Meticulously hand crafted, incredibly durable! Also available Blue, Violet and Red.
Note: There was a BIG increase in USPS shipping rates during Jan 2016. I only charge enough to cover postage, packaging costs and Ebay fees.
This is one tough cable, the screw fitting end alone undergoes my proprietary 55 step assembly process.
The real deal! Individually hand crafted using high end Canare L-4E6S Quad Core OFC microphone wire, silicone injected Switchcraft components, silver solder, multiple layers of expensive double wall self adhesive heat shrink tubing + several exclusive premium features.
Often shipped same/next day as payment arrives. Max shipping wait is 5 days if I need to fabricate one to fill your order. The only exception is if I’m traveling for a gig or vacation, please contact me before purchasing if your order is time sensitive!
Ever wonder why your rig is sometimes quiet and sometimes has more hum? Or why your signal sometimes cuts out or crackles? Aside from issues with incoming power, or problems inside your mic or amp, these things are usually traceable to a damaged or poorly designed cable… a Tone Defender properly addressed these common problems.
The quad core wire in a Tone Defender offers superior shielding against RF (radio frequency) and EM (electro-magnetic) interference, especially when compared to typical twisted pair mic cables or center conductor ‘instrument cable’. This high level of shielding offers real world benefits when on stage surrounded by neon signs, wireless mic transmitters, lighting controllers, speaker wires, and randomly positioned power cables… as well as the magnetic fields generated by transformers in instrument amps, pedal boards and PA amps. Unlike single conductor cables, the shield on a Tone Defender does not transmit the minus side of the signal, instead, the + and – pathways are each carried by a pair of conductors that nest safely inside of the shield. This studio grade technology helps provide interference free transmission of your signal in all environments.
All that shielding does no good if the cable doesn’t hold together… I’ve put many years of thought and experimentation into that topic, developing and then refining a time consuming multiple step construction process which insures that a Tone Defender is incredibly robust. I think you could probably swing from it (not recommended) and still have it pass a clean signal. The first ones I made a decade ago were outstanding, ZERO failures reported so far. This is now the third generation Tone Defender, as good as the others were these are even stronger… This beast also looks great!
Some other screw fitting cables cost less… at least in the short term. One of which is very well known to fail the first time it’s subjected to common twisting forces, or upon receiving the inevitable hard yank when someone steps on a trailing section. Some look like they will hold up longer, but none I’ve seen here on ebay compare to the robust construction and shielding properties of a Tone Defender.
I likely earn far less per hour than those who sell the cheaper ones, each Tone Defender takes 2+ hours to hand craft, some of the others would quite obviously take only about 10-15 minutes. The raw materials alone in a Tone Defender cost more than the final selling price of many others. My normal bench rate for labor equals more than my selling price. Not much profit here, just wanted to fill the void and offer the harmonica community a proven superior product that will perform at a very high level and stand the test of time. If someone claims their cable has better “specifications” then look at ALL the specs, rather than just the ones that are being boasted about, which might be things that are not particularly meaningful in real world use. Look to see if they are comparing to the L-4E6S quad core cable I use rather than a different grade. Many cable descriptions on ebay ignore the important factors of shielding properties, insulator shrink-back, wire strand counts, low temp flexibility, and long term durability. Ask the fabricator to cite the exact brand and part number of the wire they are using, this is typically absent from their ebay listings. Some of the wire I see used in cheap cables is commonly available for less than 2 cents a foot! Several manufacturers print meaningless buzzwords on their cheap cable such as ‘Low Noise’ or ‘No Noise’ (no such thing) or ‘High Definition’… regardless of these claims those products don’t measure up.
When I see other fabricators making good stuff and conducting themselves in an open ethical manner I am quick to acknowledge it, quite often publicly. I know at least a couple others who make quality cables at a couple different price points, I frequently speak well of them, and even though we are competitors I often send people their way. I have shared knowledge freely with many who have asked how they could build a better product. That said, I’ve never been shy about pointing out the all too abundant hustles and marketing hype that so often pops up on internet auction sites… ask for my free Harp Mic Buyers Guide if you want to further explore this topic.
Unlike most cables with synthetic “tweed” wrappings or with cheesy plastic jackets (you get what you pay for), a Tone Defender will remain flexible in sub-freezing temperatures. Storing or uncoiling the Canare Quad wire in such conditions will not damage the outer jacket or the high grade XLPE insulation surrounding each of the 40 strand quad conductors. Inferior insulation types can actually crack and cause short circuits when flexed or dropped while frozen! Age has a similar effect on the cheap stuff, some tend to dry out & crack.
While on the topic of tweed jacketed wire… modern nylon or fiberglass “tweed” covering isn’t “cloth” in the sense that we usually think of. It may have a vintage “look”, but claims of it being either vintage or cloth seem to be pandering and misleading.
Worse still… the “tweed” rubs against the rubbery jacket underneath and can induce a static charge. Think about rubbing a balloon on your head, it’s same general principal. When capacitance and other specifications are measured they are of course done under ideal lab conditions… on stage in the real world these specs are unlikely to hold true for “tweed” covered cables due to the above mentioned rubbing issue. Tweed outer jackets make a cable needlessly fat, stiff, and bulky, they take up a lot of extra space in your kit, and add additional stress to the shield underneath when bent at tight angles. Draw tweed covered wire through your hand too fast & you’ll wind up with a nasty rope burn! There’s also those little bits of synthetic material they shed, which can get inside of your harps and choke reeds, also into your microphones and then into your lungs when you play! No thanks!
Due to hand fabrication the length of a Tone Defender can vary +/- 3 inches (1″ is typical).

Sent via USPS Flat Rate Priority Mail to all US locations. Insured shipping is at extra cost beyond my published rates, please contact me before making payment if insurance is desired. These cables are EXTREMELY DURABLE, I offer the default option of non-insured shipping to save you money. Once again, I do not provide refunds for non-insured items that may be lost or damaged in transit, you assume all risk of loss or damage if you do not request and then pay for insurance. Orders of under $400 from outside the US ship via USPS First Class International. Insured Priority Mail shipping outside the US is available but has become very expensive, as much as 10x the economical First Class rates… I’m not making extra profit from it. First Class International is sometimes very slow, sometimes 10 weeks or more, but usually faster. I’ll mail your item promptly, please base you feedback upon how quickly it left my hands rather than how long it takes to arrive.
Only a single cable is included in the auction, anything else shown is for illustrative purposes and/or to provide a sense of scale.
Mini Bio: I’m the Twin Tone and Harmonica Planet.com guy, stage manager for the international SPAH convention since 2012, producer of the International Blues Blowoff, and 9 year stage manager/co-producer of a major blues festival. I also front The Well Diggers on harp & vocals. Been playing harmonica 40+ years & have built mic’s for well over three decades. Retired from a tech career that spanned nearly 35 years, a career that left me uniquely qualified to design and build world class mic’s and cables. My father was a VP with Storz Broadcasting, he and two others cooked up the top 40 radio format way back in the 1950’s. Pre-teen years included many visits to the Storz/WQAM studios in Miami, where I was mesmerized by all the buttons, gauges, spinning tape reels and microphones… it got in my blood & never left.
Be sure to check out my other fine products and to ask for my free harp mic buyers guide. It contains information needed to identify shoddy products and to steer clear of frequently misleading sales hype… Allows you to make an informed buying decision. I’ll be pleased to send a copy even if you don’t buy from me.
I reserve the right to immediately cancel a transaction if you do not abide all of the terms above and below.
Here’s my painless seller terms… Read before buying: If I goofed I’ll quickly and cheerfully make it right (within reason). If you goofed, or changed your mind, or didn’t ask before bidding… then no return or refund. I’m reasonable and ethical, any polite indication from you of a mistake in my listing, or of a shipping problem, will result in a positive and proactive response. Be patient, I’m retired and occasionally travel; I will quickly take care of you upon returning… or immediately from a remote location if circumstances permit. If the Post Office or shipping company loses or damages an uninsured item then you will have to seek recourse solely from that entity. I will assist if I can in such cases (I’ve never had it happen) but I will not offer refunds if someone else caused the problem. In the unlikely event we can’t come to terms; buyer agrees to complete the ebay dispute process prior to leaving feedback or taking any action outside of eBay.
Buyers with less than seven (7) positive feedbacks: You are welcome, but you must contact me before bidding/buying. I need you to state that you understand the item description, and that you agree to all of the shipping policies and seller terms written in this listing. To make it quick and easy just write (via CONTACT SELLER) that you agree to all of my terms. If you fail to do so and then buy an item, and then fail to quickly respond to my messages… then I claim the right to cancel the sale and keep 20% to cover my time, trouble, lost revenue, bookkeeping expense and seller fees… I will send the remaining 80% back to you once I have made ebay/Paypal aware of the situation. Same applies if you agree and then later breach any of these terms. (apologies to all the good buyers out there, just tired of scammers, malicious/harassing competitors, and those who do not read the listing before buying)
Payment is due within 24 hours from all international buyers, or any buyer with fewer than 7 feedbacks, or from buyers with feedback ratings of under 98%, or buyers with any negatives within the past 6 months… unless I agree otherwise in writing prior to you placing a bid. Buyer pays all applicable international fees. No worries for all the good buyers out there, I’m patient with honest misunderstandings, and I will cheerfully fix any problem that may originate on my end.
Return Policy Details: Buyer must report any issues in detail via ebay “CONTACT SELLER” within 3 days of delivery. Returns must be pre-authorized and be well packaged, properly addressed, and have the correct paid postage w/tracking. Returns accepted ONLY if an item is shipping damaged or not materially as described. No refunds for damaged or undelivered if not insured. No refunds prior to refund from carrier if applicable. If carrier allows you to file a damage claim on your end you may need to do so in lieu of a return. I will cheerfully assist in any way I can if this situation ever arises.
Your bid or purchase = you agree to abide by all of these terms and conditions.
